Rogatien “Rogie” Vachon wasn’t afraid to wander from his net even with the likes of Bobby Hull on his tail. The diminutive native of Palmarolle, Quebec was called up to Montreal in 1967 to replace the injured “Gump “Worsley, and ended up leading the team to the Stanley Cup Finals against Toronto, where Leafs’ coach, PunchImlach, famously referred to him as a “Junior B goalie.” The Leafs won that Cup but Vachon was
a member of the Canadiens team that won the next two. Vachon was traded to Los Angeles in 1971. In 1976, he was the MVP of Team Canada, winning the Canada Cup. Vachon was the Kings’ assistant then head coach in 1983-84, and general manager from 1984 to 1992. His number 30 was the first Kings jersey to be retired.
